High Availability A high availability system will continue to operate even if one or more of its components fail. Refers to the percentage of time a computer system remains in continuous operation for mission-critical applications. Often referred to in “nines.” “Five nines” is a system available 99.999% of the time, which equates to 5 minutes and 44 seconds of allowable downtime per year, or less than one second per day. “Four nines” is a system available 99.99% of the time, which equates to 53 minutes of allowable downtime.
