Stronger eInvoicing requirements are coming

In recent news, the Government has announced its intention to support SMEs in Aotearoa NZ with a shake-up of government payment guidelines to improve payment times.  Beginning with a repeal of the Business Payments Practices Act 2023, the new framework would see the use of non-regulatory measures to ramp up the use of eInvoicing and require more government agencies to receive eInvoices and pay eInvoices faster.

For businesses already transacting with government entities, these proposed changes signal a significant shift towards eInvoicing becoming the standard invoicing method.  Businesses that proactively embrace these eInvoicing changes stand to benefit not only from streamlined processes but also from enhanced collaboration with government entities. Exploring eInvoicing solutions becomes imperative for staying ahead in this evolving landscape.

What Happens Next…?

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will initiate consultations with government agencies affected by the proposed eInvoicing requirements and payment time targets. This collaborative approach seeks to establish implementation timeframes, ensuring a smooth transition for all stakeholders.

As the government gears up for these changes, it's crucial for businesses to assess their readiness for eInvoicing. With over 13,000 New Zealand businesses and 40+ government agencies already registered to receive eInvoices, the adoption trend is evident. Most small businesses have access to free or low-cost eInvoicing through their accounting software or specialised portals.
